MTSU Theatre and Dance aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully enter professional fields of dance and theatre, within the context of a comprehensive liberal arts education. Our training programs emphasize performance and production, with students playing key roles--both onstage and off-- in Tucker Theatre shows.

The Department of Theatre and Dance features an array of courses unmatched by most other training programs. We bring regional, national, and internationally renowned artists to campus each semester through our guest artist program. And, we provide extensive opportunities for students off-campus as well - including internships, study abroad opportunities featuring performance tours to international destinations, and participation in regional and national conferences for the profession. Full programs of study culminate in either the new Bachelor of Science (BS) in Dance or a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Theatre. Additionally, minors are available in Dance, Theatre, Musical Theatre, and Entertainment Arts Design. We engage students through high-level training and study, while providing opportunities for enrichment through artist-in-residence programs, national and international travel, and involvement with professional organizations and venues.

Our department offers a B.S. in Theatre that is based on the belief that it is essential for future theatre artists to develop a broad-based understanding of the art form through foundational study in acting, design and technology, directing, analysis and history as a core component. Building on this, students then develop theoretical and practical expertise in specialty areas according to their particular career interest. These areas of advanced study include acting, directing, playwriting and dramatic theory, management, as well as the design and technology areas of costuming, scenery, and lighting. Students may also complete a Secondary Education minor to obtain K-12 Theatre Teacher licensure.
